Model Railroad Celebration: A Maine Christmas Tradition

Ease into the season with the Model Railroad Celebration

The annual model railroad celebration at the Maine State Museum in Augusta is an excellent low-key pre-Christmas activity that the whole family can enjoy! We took in the one-day show last Saturday – and despite the cold, rainy weather – the turnout was brisk. You’ll want to put this show on your calendar for next December!

The show was hosted by the Great Falls Model Railroad Club and the Maine 3-Railers Club.

There were several layouts, our favorites being the Maine-inspired scenes and the miniature saw mill – while the younger crowd was enthralled with the Polar Express. My personal favorite was the miniature scale version of a working potato farm in Aroostook County (see above). The attention to detail is amazing!

Hot Air Ballooning in Maine

Hot Air Ballooning in Maine

by Marissa Gianino

From lift off to landing, hot air ballooning is one of the most exciting and scenic outdoor Maine activities! I could not wait to share my experience after riding in a hot air balloon 2,000 feet up. I truly had the chance of a lifetime.

As a part of Lewiston/Auburn’s Annual Great Falls Balloon Festival, I experienced both a breathtaking aerial view and an even more amazing sight around me. The surrounding sky was filled with several other hot air balloons of different colors, patterns, and sizes. The entire experience exceeded any expectations I held of hot air ballooning.

Another fun part of the trip was watching the pilot and grounds crew while they set up for the launch. Since the wind, rather than the pilot, chooses where we will land, the crew follows in their vehicles from below so they can be ready to help pack up. I was intrigued by the whole process from start to finish. A celebratory champagne toast with the pilot, crew members, and landowners (who also were unaware of our landing) brought our Maine adventure to an end. Cheers to a centuries-old Maine tradition! I am already looking forward to next summer’s balloon festival and another leisurely flight above Lewiston/Auburn!

Ziplining in Maine: Welcome to Monkey Trunks in Saco!

Looking for the ultimate outdoor Maine activity? Look no further than Monkey Trunks in Saco! Conveniently located off of Route 1, Monkey Trunks is hard to miss with its ziplines and large obstacle ropes course.

While I am not typically a thrill seeker, I had wanted to go ziplining for quite some time and was more than excited to discover Monkey Trunks. Needless to say, I was far from disappointed with my experience. I was able to try out more than four different ziplines. At first, I was nervous upon reaching the ledge where the two main ziplines begin, but I felt perfectly secure in my harness.

Although the ropes course at Monkey Trunks was a good time, ziplining definitely proved to be my favorite part of the day, and I kept going back for more turns.
Up we go!

Up we go!

Overall, I found ziplining to be both an exhilarating and a memorable Maine activity, and am so glad that I had the opportunity to experience it. I would certainly recommend a day at Monkey Trunks to anyone looking for a truly safe and fun activity in Maine, both for families and individuals alike.
