A little baseball lesson on the streets of Damariscotta

The kiddos and I stumbled into a really cool and informative baseball moment this morning in Damariscotta. Bud Elwin, a.k.a. Ted Williams, had set up a raffle ticket selling display in front of the Maine Coast Book Shop & Cafe. With all of the Red Sox gear and Bud’s striking resemblance to the infamous Ted Williams, we had to see what was up!

On a rainy Friday morning, the bookstore was bustling; the smell of fresh coffee and books was a welcoming and intoxicating mix. Outside, we stopped to see what the fully-uniformed Bud was up to. It turns out he volunteers to raise money for assorted charities of his choosing.

This year he chose to sell raffle tickets for “Healthy Kids,” a community based family and professional network, offering support and educational outreach to families throughout Lincoln County. He’s raffling off Red Sox gear with the grand prize being an authentic, signed and framed photo of Ted Williams.

We learned from Bud that Major League baseball goes through about 170,000 baseballs in a season, that the average game baseball sees about 6 pitches, the wool used inside is from New Zealand sheep, and one of the most interesting facts: when a baseball comes out of the factory, it’s far to smooth to be pitched effectively. The baseballs are treated with mud – literally – harvested from the Delaware River in New Jersey. A very fun and informative visit to Damariscotta, for sure! Stop by and see Bud if you’re in town, he knows his stuff when it comes to Red Sox baseball.

A Portland, Maine overnight

I know that the trails and mountains this time of year are chock full of fun, but last weekend we snuck away to Portland to enjoy a night on the town!

Our adventure started in a blinding blizzard traveling south on 95, landing at the Holiday Inn by the Bay. It was groovy to look out over the waterfront from the ninth floor! From our room it was off to dinner at Local 188…what a great Portland dining experience! Whatever the orange cocktail thingy I had was divine, and the hangar steak was the best I’ve had in a long while! The addition of cauliflower to the mashed potatoes was an unexpected and yummy surprise. The main objective of the trip, however, was to see the Vinyl Cafe live at the Merrill Auditorium. It was a great show; excellent storytelling and two top-notch musical acts.

The next morning started with a dip in the pool, and then it was off to the Farmer’s Table on Commercial Street for one of the best brunches that I can recall. If not the best! The Bloody Marys were of blue-ribbon quality, the hash, made with delectable slow-roasted beef was outstanding, and I would highly recommend the cranberry/proseco/mead cocktail. Wow…

After this astoundingly yummy brunch, we hobbled up the hill to take in the Edward Weston and Rackstraw Downes exhibits at the Portland Museum of Art. It was a treat to take in these shows, an enormous amount of talent under one roof. All in all, a wonderful 24 hours in Maine’s special “city by the sea!”
