Writer’s Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in Activity Maine! It’s helpful if you first review a few past issues of The Activities Guide of Maine to become familiar with our style and audience. We focus on outdoor adventures, race events and Maine craft beer. For specific Activity Maine topics, we are looking for various types of content ranging from stories that introduce our readers to new adventures, towns or areas with lots to do, how to’s, travel and gear guide, reviews of places or equipment, adaptive recreation, Outdoor event coverage ex. Toboggan Championships, photography and other stories related to these but interested in hearing other topics. As for RaceME we are looking for nutrition and training tips, highlight stories behind race events and charities, fun running stories and anecdotes, inspirational stories, adaptive athletes and other stories around these topics but limited to them.

Please let us know if others are considering the piece so that we don’t overlap with another publication.

LENGTH & PAYMENT:
Manuscripts submitted for feature consideration should be approximately 1,000 words in length. Most of our stories are shorter and more direct and range from 350-750 words as a general rule. Our rates vary with each individual submission and range from $100 per item for shorter pieces up to $250-$400 for feature articles. We buy one-time North American print and digital rights and pay after publication unless other arrangements are made in advance.

PHOTOGRAPHER GUIDELINES –See your photo in Activity Maine! We are always on the lookout for images that depicts fun and adventure in the outdoors. Any type of recreation with a scenic background representing a region is ideal.

Winter Guidelines

Include winter activities in Maine, from the coast to the mountains. From kids to seniors. Some examples are ice skating, pond hockey, snow shoeing, winter hiking, XC Skiing, downhill skiing, winter scenic shots around Maine, backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, ice climbing,  events or festivals, ice fishing, winter wildlife shots, any town events including polar dips or winter road races. Also just plain fun winter shots of people and or animals enjoying a Maine winter. Photographers often have good ideas and we are open to any of them as well.

Summer Guidelines are similar to winter’s except for activities in the warmer months

A general guideline we are looking for in an Activity Maine photo is to capture people in a motivating way that stimulates emotion and connects a viewer to the image and encourages them to take part and try it. Basically make people say “I want to DO THAT or GO there!”. Feel free to send us your portfolio or samples of your work. It’s helpful if you first look through a few back issues of the magazine to familiarize yourself with the types of  photos we use. Digital files should be clearly named. All unsolicited submissions must be accompanied by a SASE.

RATES & RIGHTS:

Our rates are based uponplacement of the photo, and range from $25 to $250 for the main cover photograph. Payment is made after publication for one-time North American print and digital rights. Other rights may be negotiated on a case-by-case basis. Materials will be returned using the same method you used to send them to us. Send materials to:  subscribe@activitymaine.com

Photographer/Copyright

Entries must be submitted by the original photographer. Do not submit a photo taken by someone other than yourself. You must be the sole owner of the copyright of any image submitted. Your submission of the photo and entry form is your guarantee that you are the author and copyright holder of the photo.
