Looking for a great activity to do with friends, family, or just get away for a few hours?

The answer is disc golf, and Maine has a ton of disc golf courses. One of the first ten official disc golf courses in the world was built in Maine shortly after the sport was officially formalized in 1975. Disc golf is the fastest growing sport in Maine. Courses are located in every corner of Maine, which now boasts 36 courses. The average cost is $5 for a round or $8-10 for the day. Some are in heavily wooded areas others are in open fields. Finn Brook Disc Golf in Whitefield features all of the above plus baskets on the beautiful Sheepscot River. Some are 9 holes, most are 18, and some have 1-3 courses on the property. Most have rentals available, and some have discs for sale.

Disc golfing is a sport for all ages and abilities. It is very common to see multi-generations of families out enjoying themselves, and the wildlife on the courses.
Most courses have people available to get you started with impromptu lessons for those new to the sport, but the players who play this sport are some of the most incredible people and are always willing share their knowledge and skills. Many of the courses have leagues and tournaments throughout the summer and would love to have you join in. Woodland Valley Disc Golf in Limerick is presently constructing their 3rd and most challenging course yet, and would love to have you stop by for a round.

Dragon Disc Golf Championships are held in early June, and boasts former World and National champions amongst its former winners. Their beginner events, known as Greenhorn tournaments and traditionally held in late July and early August. New to the schedule this year is another large scale PDGA-sanctioned event being put together in conjunction with the Baxter Brewing company of Lewiston.

Disc golf is a fun activity for folks of all ages. It’s also a year round activity. A number of courses stay open year round, clearing and grooming the snow for easier play. So get out there and try the great sport of disc golf, you’ll be glad you did!
